COMPETENCE OF NURSES FOR THE PROVISION OF MULTICULTURAL NURSING CARE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING
- 1 Katedra ošetrovateľstva, Fakulta zdravotníctva so sídlom v Banskej Bystrici, Slovenská zdravotnícka univerzita v Bratislave
Background: Changes in the provision of health care caused by new demographic conditions in the countries of the European Union require the readiness of nurses to provide multicultural nursing care.
Aim: Based on the evaluation of the level of knowledge from multicultural nursing, to assess the readiness of nurses to provide nursing care to patients from other cultures.
Method: The method of electronic knowledge testing via Microsoft Forms was used. The test questions verified the theoretical basis of multicultural nursing and the use of knowledge from multicultural nursing in practice. The file included 285 nurses with professional registration in Slovakia.
Results: The average number of points achieved by the whole set was 16.12 points (possible maximum 30 points). From the theoretically focused questions, the average number of points obtained was 6.45 (possible maximum 15 points). In questions focused on practical use in multicultural nursing, the average point gain was 12.95 points (possible maximum 25 points). Significantly higher points were achieved by nurses with a higher level of education (p = 0.005; K-W). The point gain of nurses was not related to the field in which they work or the length of practice.
Conclusion: The results of the research revealed only the average level of knowledge of nurses from multicultural nursing. They showed a slightly better situation in the multicultural competence of younger nurses with a higher level of education. The results point to the need for continuous education of nurses with many years of experience in multicultural nursing.
