Background: The shortage of nurses is one of the significant problems of the health care system in Slovakia. Motivating and demotivating factors are the key to the performance of the nursing profession, especially during an emergency situation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which determined all areas of life.Aim: To identify the most common motivating and demotivating factors for the nursing profession during the COVID-19  pandemic.Methods: A self-designed questionnaire focusing on motivating and demotivating factors was used for quantitative research. The present  theoretical-review  article  discusses  etymology  and  conceptual  history  of selected terms in Czech and English nursing discourse (patient, client, health, care, nursing, nurse). The aim of the article is to elucidate original word meanings of the relevant expressions in the discipline and their changes. The text is based on the author´s linguistic and teaching experience, a long tradition of etymological lexicography in both languages and a literature search performed in the PubMed, ScienceDirect and Medvik databases.
