Background: Motivation of nurses is a contemporary topic, the increasing interest in this issue can be observed in the last two decades in particular due to increasing scarcity of nurses, early departure of nurses from the profession, or their migration to other countries.

Aim: This research paper investigates work motivation of general nurses working in standard wards or intensive care units.

Methods: A cross-section study using a survey was performed with general nurses employed by two healthcare providers in the Pilsen and Liberec areas.

Results: Statistical analysis of 296 questionnaires was performed. The motivating factor “Wage” was ranked as the most important and has also shown the greatest level of divergence in terms of how it was ranked by nurses and employers (p = 0,00). The priority of individual motivating factors did not differ significantly between nurses working in the wards or intensive care.

Discussion: The results of the survey were not surprising and are in line with previous research studies. Nurses have been feeling underpaid for a period of time already. Lower levels of motivation among general nurses in our study were related to an elevated level of negative influence of factors: time pressure, low financial remuneration, working overtime, stress and a high number of patients.

Conclusion: If general nurses are insufficiently or negatively motivated in the long term, not only high occurrence of fluctuation, but also the occurrence of psychological and somatic issues, often resulting in a burnout, will become a problem.

Keywords: job motivation, motivational factors, general nurse, attitude toward nursing
