Introduction: Peer review in nursing is a process by which nurses systematically assess, monitor, and provide feedback to their colleagues on the quality of nursing care measured in accordance with professional standards of practice. Nursing peer review supports teamwork, decision-making, autonomy, professionalism and responsibility of nurses.

Objective: To assess how feedback and constructive criticism are delivered and received within nursing teams, considering the impact of age diversity, in the context of peer review among nurses.

Methods: 86 nurses participated in the pilot study and peer review. The evaluated nurses (n = 43) were represented by the generation cohorts Z (n = 14); Y (n = 17); X (n = 11) and one nurse from the Baby Boomer generation. The evaluating nurses (n = 43) were predominantly from the generation Z (n = 40); two nurses from the generation X and one nurse from the generation Y. All nurses (both evaluated and evaluating) working in institutional healthcare facilities had no experience with peer review. The peer review assessment was carried out in 2023 by analyzing the criteria in the peer review assessment forms and semi-structured interviews. The InStat® software, Version 3.02 32 bit for Win95/NT, GraphPad Software, Inc., USA, was used for statistical processing.

Results: We verified statistically significant differences between generations of nurses in providing knowledge, experience and support to colleagues (p = 0.003) and IT knowledge (p = 0.015). The average score across all peer review indicators for the 43 evaluated nurses was ( = 4.06). Peer communication ( = 4.32) and sharing of knowledge, experience, and support with peers were rated as very good ( = 4.139). The average score for accepting constructive criticism ( = 3.51) indicates non-assertive communication and a low level of emotional intelligence among some respondents.

Conclusion: Reflection on nursing care through the provision and reception of feedback and constructive criticism, problem-solving, and open communication among nurses serves as a tool for improving the quality of practice and significantly contributes to both the personal and professional development of nurses.
