BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY AND FILL THE EARTH... (GENESIS 1:28). SEXUALITY IN RELIGIOUS AND MAGICAL RITUALS IN THE PAST

Introduction: Magical and religious rituals have accompanied human society since ancient times, in some cases to the present day. They were, among other things, a manifestation of an individual’s efforts to influence the choice of a partner, to obtain and maintain it, or to deter or destroy a rival. Primarily natural means were used, especially herbs, the effect of which was strengthened by rituals, whether Christian or those persisting from a traditional environment influenced by a recurring agricultural cycle. The broad issues of reaction to legal and church rules of morality and sin, consummation of marriage intercourse, natural and magical inducing of impotence, use of aphrodisiacs and antiaphrodisiacs, abortifacients, activities aimed at preventing conception, promoting conception and fertility, possibilities of magical and natural inducing or preventing impotence, punishment of fornication and adultery, perception of magic as a manifestation of heresy and witchcraft and their persecution, association and encounter with magical and religious rituals are affected.

Objective: To sort and organize the amount of data scattered in sources and literature and to present their summary in a concise form.

Methodology: For the processing, domestic and foreign literature, source editions, especially medieval homilies and penitentials, and the results of previous research in the field of folk culture were used.

Results: A brief overview of the historical development of the influence of some magical and religious rituals on issues related to relationships between men and women, with a primary focus on the areas of sexuality, conception, pregnancy and childbirth, and efforts to influence them with the help of contacts with supernatural forces from the early Middle Ages to the recent past.

Conclusion: The process of forming mutual relationships between men and women with the aim of finding a life partner and together with him ensuring the continuation of the human race has been accompanied since ancient times by the individual’s effort to become familiar with the fate that awaits him in the future, or to influence this fate with the help of communication with supernatural forces towards achieving the desired result. Establishing connections with gods and goddesses influencing human actions and behavior was replaced by the monopoly of a new teaching after the penetration of Christianity, which reserved the right to contact God and potential intercessors (patrons) in various areas of everyday life. There was a partial overlaying of older rituals with new, partly or completely Christian ones. A frequent motivation for the application of magical means was the effort to avoid penalties for violating moral principles and legal regulations. The active use of magical rituals was persecuted by both church and secular power as a manifestation of witchcraft and heresy. Many of the older rituals, modified with a Christian coating, survived, especially in conservative agricultural environments, at least until the 19th century and are manifested in a transformed form and are artificially cultivated as part of folk culture and folk traditions.
