ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE AS A DETERMINANT OF ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS
- 1 Vysoká škola zdravotníctva a sociálnej práce sv. Alžbety v Bratislave, n. o., Detašované pracovisko bl. Sáry Salkaházi v Rožňave
Background: Organizational culture makes an organization unique and different. It affects its performance and success. It is considered to be a significant factor that determines management processes and influences the competitive ability of the organization. Organisational culture can be characterised as a set of core values, assumptions, attitudes and norms of behaviour of the members of a given organisation. In the management of health care institutions in Slovakia, the features of hierarchical, adhocratic, clan and market managerial culture are combined.
Aim: The aim of our survey was to monitor nurses’ views on current and preferred management culture as a determinant of the success of a healthcare organization.
Methods: We used a standardized Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) questionnaire to collect data. The results were analyzed using Cronbach’s α coefficient. For each type of managerial culture, we determined the means (x̄) and 95% confidence intervals. We present the results for the total dataset of the four types of managerial cultures. The study population consisted of a total of 168 nurses from three health care facilities.
Results: Statistical analysis of the data demonstrated the applicability of the competing values model in identifying the impact of organizational culture on organizational success. Organizational culture varies across healthcare facilities. In the government health facility, hierarchical organizational culture was considered as a criterion for success. In non-state health facilities, it is a combination of clan and market organizational culture.
Conclusion: the combination of multiple organizational cultures is a sign of a modern approach to management. The Competing Values Model is a tool that enables managers to quickly change management processes in light of strategic objectives. It improves decision-making and is therefore considered a determinant of organizational success.
