Background: Arterial hypertension is the main risk factor for heart disease, kidney disease and sudden stroke. In the prevention and treatment of arterial hypertension, you will receive relevant information from healthcare professionals, including nurses. However, these are aimed at implementing behaviors and actions to promote health only if they have a certain level of health literacy.

Aim: The article is aimed at presenting the results of a pilot study in individual areas of health literacy with arterial hypertension in relation to the age of the respondents.

Methods: Data collection within the pilot study was carried out using the Slovak version of the standardized measuring instrument Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) on a sample of 96 respondents.

Results: Results were extracted from the data set of the pilot study according to individual domains of the HLQ measuring instrument in relation to the age of the respondents. As age is an important attribute in the perception of quality of life and attitudes towards health, we divided the group of respondents into four classes. As part of the pilot study, we focused on the relationship between the domain level and each of the four age categories of the respondents.

Discussion: Health literacy of patients diagnosed with arterial hypertension is an important phenomenon that determines the compensation of the disease and the prevention of often very serious complications. The HLQ, as a complex measurement tool focused on nine domains of health literacy, allows to conceive a detailed profile of the respondent's health literacy and to identify problematic areas on which it is appropriate to focus recommendations or interventions aimed at improving health literacy.

Conclusion: Arterial hypertension is a risk factor for diseases of the heart, blood vessels and vital organs. In the prevention and treatment of arterial hypertension, health literacy has an irreplaceable place as a person's ability to acquire, understand and use health information for making the right decisions in favor of his health. Nurses, who represent a large group of healthcare professionals, have an important position in the promotion of health literacy, and their influence in the field of health literacy can be strong and significantly positive.
