Background: In this paper we present the application of parenteral anticoagulants as a daily part of the nurse's activity.
Aim: To present knowledge on the application of low molecular weight heparins based on available resources and experience from clinical practice.
Methodology: In a narrative literature review, we specify the application of anticoagulants in 2 ways and highlight the complications associated with this nursing procedure. The search included English-language studies in four selected scientific databases, published between 2017 and
2021, with a total of 4248 publications. The key term was "LMWH application." After final selection, we used 14 research studies for content analysis.
Results: The most common complications included hematomas, ecchymoses, and pain. Adverse reactions are influenced by drug administration technique, needle length and other factors. Research studies are intervening to reduce and prevent complications. Application of a cold pack before and after the procedure is beneficial. Equally positive for less incidence of hematomas and less intense pain is the adherence to a 30-second drug administration time and withdrawal of the needle from the subcutaneous tissue after a 10-second interval. Mechanoanalgesia was also beneficial for the patient.
Conclusions: Despite the routine performance of nurses, it is necessary to observe the specifics of anticoagulant administration with regard to safe administration and patient comfort. Continuing education in line with evidence-based practice can improve the quality of nursing care provided.
Keywords: parenteral anticoagulants, subcutaneous application, low molecular weight heparin, nurse, patient
