THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN HOSPITALIZED ATIENTS WITH AUTOLOGOUS TRANSPLANTATION OF HEMATOPOIESIS
- 1 Klinika hematoonkologie, Fakultní nemocnice Ostrava
Aim: The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the importance of physical activity in patients hospitalized during high-dose chemotherapy with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, its effect on the level of anxiety, depression, fatigue and insight into the quality of life of
hematooncological patient.
Methodology: Data were collected in the University Hospital Ostrava, Clinic of Haemotooncology. We used standardized questionnaires: Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–General FACT-G (version 4), Beck Anxiety Inventory BAI, Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale
ESAS, Patient Health Questionnaire–9. The muscular strength of the dominant hand was measured with a hand dynamometer.
Results: The research sample included 69 patients. The results indicate that physical activity in patients hospitalized during auto-HCT is statistically significant in reducing anxiety p = 0,0018 and improving muscle strenght p = 0,018. In the sub-domains, there was a statistically significant change in social/family well-being p = 0,0454 and in emotional well-being p = 0,0112. There was a statistically significant reduction in pain, drawsiness, anxiety, depression in the symptoms of the ESAS scale, while nausea and anorexia worsened, which can be attributed to the side effects of high–dose chemotherapy.
Conclusion: Physical activity has a positive effect on hospitalization during autologous transplantation, it does not worsen the health of patients in the sense o prolonging hospitalization. Appropriate activity can prevent complications, maintain muscle
strength and thus self-sufficiency, independance and improve quality of life.
