- 1 Katedra ošetrovateľstva, Fakulta zdravotníctva, Katolícka univerzita v Ružomberku
Background: The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is becoming more and more expansive not only in connection with the fulfillment of work or study obligations, but also in free time. ICT can be perceived in the context of various negative consequences on a person's health and psychological state. Modern technologies, as an integral part of human life nowadays, can also be used to support and protect health. Nurses, as the largest group of healthcare professionals, have wide opportunities in this area.
Aim: The article is aimed at presenting the results of a survey, the aim of which was to determine the rate of ICT use in the adult population.
Methods: A self-constructed questionnaire focusing on the use of ICT in the adult population was used for quantitative research. The file consisted of 142 respondents aged 18 and over.
Results: The most frequently used ICT were a mobile phone and a laptop. The average time of use during working hours is 5 hours. The average time spent using ICT in free time is 3.5 hours. The most common purpose of using ICT is searching for information on the Internet and social networks.
Discussion: ICT is increasingly influencing many areas of human life, mental and physical health and habits. The focus on the adult population of respondents was influenced by the fact that, within the framework of the problem that was the subject of research, adults can assess the
relationship between the use of ICT and their health or lifestyle, they are role models for children and adolescents in the area of health and health habits, they participate in their education, and they also look for information in this context through ICT more often than younger age groups. Based on the obtained results, interventions are designed that can be implemented in nursing practice.
Conclusion: The research pointed to facts that can also be used in the field of nursing, namely to promote the negative consequences of excessive use of ICT in everyday life, but also to use ICT as a means to protect and promote health and spread health- promoting information.
