RESTRICTION OF NURSING IN ADDICTOLOGY
- 1 Katedra ošetrovateľstva, Fakulta zdravotníckych odborov, Prešovská univerzita v Prešove
Introduction: The work of an addictology nurse has its limits and specifics, but it is as significant and beneficial as nursing in other medical fields. Addiction negatively affects the quality of life of the patient and their family, increases morbidity, mortality and, together with unemployment, violence and criminal activity, also poses a serious social problem.
Aim: The aim of our study was to discover, analyse and evaluate the interest in working in the field of drug addiction medicine among students on the Bachelor’s programme in nursing.
Set and methodology: The study involved 76 students in the Bachelor’s programme in nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Prešov University in Prešov. For the empirical collection of quantitative data, we used a questionnaire of our own design, which consisted of 18 items. We evaluated the data obtained using the descriptive statistics method.
Results and discusion: We found that respondents do not have sufficient knowledge about the prevention of drug addictions that are the responsibility of the nurse. Less than one-third of those in question are interested in working in drug addiction medicine, however they are interested in conducting clinical exercises in psychiatry.
Conclusion: In the undergraduate education of nurses, it is necessary to strengthen the curriculum on drug addiction, to bring students closer to the job of an addictology nurse and to contribute to its attractiveness, given the prevalence of drug addictions in the population and the degree of
preventability.
