Introduction: The IHIS statistics for 2019 confirm 102,000 patients with dementia in the Czech Republic. There are 582 people with this disease per 100,000 inhabitants, which is 0.6  % of the population. The article maps the development of dementia to the present.
Aims: The aim of the publication is to provide an overview of the development and current state of dementia in the Czech Republic and abroad. To get acquainted with this disease, to point out dementia as a societal problem, and to appeal to its solution.

Methods: For data collection, the analysis of documents I domestic and classic search and foreign databases and using keywords and Boolean operators was chosen for data collection. The information was drawn from domestic and foreign reference sources, which are listed in the Literature section at the end of the  paper.

Results: The results obtained associated with dementia were analyzed and processed into an overview
from the history of development to the present. Literary research provided insight into works and
studies published in Czech and English.

Conclusion: The number of people with dementia in the Czech Republic and in the world is increasing from year to year, care for them is highly demanding and burdensome, especially in the developed stage. It is in the interest of the whole society that there is sufficient information about the disease itself, its development, burden and possibilities of health and social services, respite care and specialized centers. There is a need to raise people's awareness of this serious disease through media campaigns, to call on health professionals to intensify education and to
approach dementia as a global  problem.
