Benign esophageal stenoses lead to dysphagic problems that prevent patients from eating, the patients lose weight, suffer from malnutrition, and their quality of life is significantly affected. We have several treatment options in clinical practice. The first one is pharmacological treatment with the application of corticosteroids, the second is the non-pharmacological treatment of esophageal dilatation, stent placement, incision or self-assisted dilatation at home. The third alternative is the surgical treatment. In our case report, self-assisted dilatation has proven to be a safe, effective, well-tolerated method with satisfactory benefit, treatment outcome, and a positive impact on patient’s quality of life.

Keywords: dysphagia, self-assisted dilatation with bougies, education, casuistry, postoperative complications
