PSYCHOSOCIAL NEEDS OF PATIENTS ON THE SPINAL UNIT

Spine and spinal cord injuries are a serious problem, it is the most common cause of death or disability of people up to 50 years of age. There are up to 400 new cases in the Czech Republic annually and half of which are permanent wheelchair users. The article maps patients with spinal lesion who are in the spinal unit in RU Hrabyně and finds out their mental and social needs. It analyzes how patients accept their situation and which area of life they perceive as the most difficult.

Aim: The aim of the investigation was to find out the psychological and social needs of patients with a spinal lesion at the spinal unit in the RU Hrabyne.

Methodology: Quantitative method of non-standardized anonymous a questionnaire was chosen for data collection and interview was used as a supplementary method.

Results and discussion: Based on a questionnaire survey, it was found that 48 (47 %) patients in the spinal unit, despite serious disability, believe that their condition will improve, trust the local professional staff. They are optimistic and are interested in working with experts. The other half presents a wide range of emotions from fear, sadness, insecurity, and hopelessness. Depression often occurs. Patients seek the help of a psychologist and a social worker.

Conclusion: People with spinal cord disability have many complications in the initial phase, most commonly internal: urinary tract inflammation, pneumonia, thermoregulation disorders, and others. They are going through a difficult time when they have to learn to accept the new situation. Finding a new meaning of life and accepting limitations is challenging, requiring the help of a psychologist, social worker, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and family. It is accompanied by a number of emotions and psychosocial needs that patients could not manage without professional help.
