THE ROLE OF HAIR REMOVAL BEFORE NEUROSURGICAL OPERATIONS
- 1 Ústav ošetřovatelství, Fakulta veřejných politik v Opavě, Slezská univerzita v Opavě
Introduction: Research deals with disturbances of body image and personal identity in connection with hair removal during preoperative preparation before neurosurgical operation. It is necessary to determine the extent of the deficit impact on biological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of the patient.
Objective: The main goal is to identify perception of body image disturbances in body image and personal identity after neurosurgical operation in relation to head shaving from the patient’s and nurse’s view.
Method: A quantitative research method was used for inquiry, using a validating questionnaire.
Results: The analysis of results evidently proves equally unfavourable perception of body vision changes in patients with partially and completely shaved hair. It was found that the negative impact was felt predominantly by women, and the most significant symptom was “hiding a part of the body”, which was also identified as the main symptom by the general nurses.
Conclusion: It was proven that body image and personal identity distortion caused by preoperative hair removal actually occurs. The changes are manifested in physical, mental and social areas.
