Background: The psychosomatic perspective on health and illness is based on the close relationship between physical and psychological experiences. Holistic care helps individuals find meaning of experiences with health as well as illness, and approaches individuals as whole, unique beings.
Objective: This work aims to analyse the level of theoretical knowledge of psychosomatics and holistic care among non-medical healthcare professionals and to determine whether they apply this knowledge in practice as part of the psychological approach to patients in healthcare.
Methods: In 2017, a quantitative questionnaire survey was completed on a sample of 339 respondents working in a faculty hospital.
Results and discussion: We found that there is good level of knowledge of psychosomatic illnesses and holistic care among our respondents. However, only 43 % of respondents stated that they have enough information about psychosomatics and holistic care. 73 % of the respondents were interested in deepening their knowledge related to psychosomatics and psychotherapy in healthcare. Interestingly, we found that the more the healthcare professionals knew about psychosomatic illnesses and psychotherapeutic approach to patients, the greater their interest in further education in this field was.
Conclusions: The psychotherapeutic approach of nurses towards patients is a very important feature that helps fulfil the objectives of holistic care and influences the efficiency and success of treatment. According to our research, healthcare professionals are interested in increasing their knowledge and skills in this area.
